Billy Cobham & The Magic Band – Park West, Chicago Illinois, March 4th 1978

Having made landmark recordings with Miles Davis, as well as forming pioneering fusion bands Dreams and the Mahavishnu Orchestra and making several fine solo albums, by 1978 Billy Cobham was firmly established as one of the world’s leading jazz-rock drummers. This superb set was broadcast by WXRT-FM, and finds him supported by his recently formed ‘Magic Band’, consisting of Charles Singleton (sax, reeds, guitar), Ray Mouton (guitar), Alvin Batiste (clarinet), Mark Soskin (keyboards) and Randy Jackson (bass). It’s presented here together with background notes and images.
