Bremen 1971 captures Embryo in concert at the Gymnasium am Leibnizplatz on 23 September 1971, shortly after the appearance of their second album, Embryo’s Rache. Recorded professionally by Radio Bremen for its “Jazz Live” series, the performance presents the Munich group during its intense early progressive jazz-rock period.
Flute, saxophone, violin and electric guitar move above a powerful bass-and-percussion foundation as the musicians expand familiar themes through long, spontaneous instrumental passages. The concert culminates in a twenty-six-minute version of “Spain Yes, Franco Finished,” combining free improvisation, driving rhythms and the politically charged character of Embryo’s early work. This Garden of Delights CD was prepared from the Radio Bremen master tape and includes a detailed 32-page booklet.
