Igra Staklenih Perli is the landmark debut album by the cult Belgrade group whose name translates as “The Glass Bead Game,” inspired by Hermann Hesse’s celebrated novel.

Formed in Yugoslavia during the second half of the 1970s, the band developed an intense form of psychedelic and space rock shaped by hypnotic rhythms, heavily treated guitar, analogue keyboards, echoing vocals and atmospheric electronic effects.

The opening “Gušterov Trg” gradually emerges from a spacious psychedelic introduction before settling into a driving rhythm dominated by guitar and keyboards. “Solarni Modus” combines pounding drums and bass with bright organ textures and an increasingly forceful guitar performance.

“Putovanje U Plavo” builds around a repetitive, trance-like rhythm and one of the album’s strongest extended guitar passages. It is also the only track sung primarily in Serbo-Croatian, while most of the remaining vocal material is performed in English.

The second half moves into darker territory. “Pečurka,” conceived as a tribute to German group Can, develops through whispered vocals, deep bass, slow percussion and dense layers of psychedelic sound. The organ-led “Majestetski Kraj” closes the album with a dramatic and increasingly powerful finale.

The music combines the cosmic atmosphere of early Pink Floyd and Hawkwind with the repetition of Can, the electronic textures of Tangerine Dream and the adventurous spirit of the European underground. The band described its distinctive approach as “music of the stream of consciousness.”

Originally issued by PGP-RTB in 1979, the album has become one of the most admired psychedelic and progressive-rock recordings from the former Yugoslavia.
