Never Neverland is the 1971 debut album by The Pink Fairies, one of the most uncompromising groups to emerge from London's Ladbroke Grove underground. Combining heavy psychedelic rock, garage energy, extended improvisation and an anti-establishment attitude, the album captures the point where the ideals of the late-sixties counterculture began to collide with the rawer sound of hard rock and proto-punk.

The line-up featured Paul Rudolph on guitar and vocals, Duncan Sanderson on bass, Russell Hunter on drums and John “Twink” Alder on drums and vocals. With two drummers driving many of the performances, the group created a dense and forceful rhythm section beneath Rudolph's distorted guitar, while their loose ensemble approach preserved the spontaneity of their celebrated free concerts and festival appearances.

“Do It” opens the album as a direct statement of the band's rebellious philosophy, combining a simple chant-like chorus with aggressive guitar and pounding percussion. “Heavenly Man” and “Say You Love Me” reveal a more melodic psychedelic side, while “Wargirl” moves through a heavy, blues-based groove. The extended title track closes the first side with shifting moods, spacious guitar passages and increasingly intense group interplay.

“Track One, Side Two” begins the second half with a loose instrumental workout, followed by the brief percussion piece “Thor.” “Teenage Rebel” anticipates the confrontational energy of punk, but the album's centrepiece is the nearly eleven-minute “Uncle Harry's Last Freak-Out,” an explosive mixture of riffing, feedback, rhythmic changes and uncontrolled psychedelic improvisation.

The brief closing track “The Dream Is Just Beginning” brings the record to an unexpectedly reflective conclusion. Its title proved appropriate: The Pink Fairies would continue to develop their rough, guitar-driven approach on What a Bunch of Sweeties and Kings of Oblivion, influencing later generations of punk, space-rock and underground hard-rock musicians.

Produced by the band together with Neil Slaven, Never Neverland remains a vivid document of the British underground at the beginning of the 1970s. This limited Tapestry Records edition presents the complete original album on heavyweight vinyl and recreates its elaborate gatefold and transparent outer-sleeve packaging.
