Ride the Lightning – Live at Orion Music + More Festival captures Metallica performing their landmark 1984 album in its entirety during the first edition of the band’s own Orion Music + More festival.

Metallica headlined both nights of the festival, presenting a different classic album at each concert. On June 23, 2012, they performed Ride the Lightning from beginning to end, but reversed the original running order: the instrumental “The Call of Ktulu” opened the sequence, while “Fight Fire with Fire” brought it to its explosive conclusion.

The performance features James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett and Robert Trujillo delivering the album with the heavier sound and considerable live power developed during the band’s decades on stage. Extended introductions, audience interaction and forceful renditions give these familiar songs a character distinct from their original studio versions.

A major highlight is “Escape,” performed live for the first time since its original appearance on the 1984 album. Long regarded as one of the least likely Metallica songs to appear in concert, its inclusion made the Orion performance a particularly significant occasion for collectors and long-time fans.

The remainder of the set includes such essential Metallica compositions as “Creeping Death,” “Fade to Black,” “For Whom the Bell Tolls” and the title track, alongside the less frequently performed “Trapped Under Ice.”

Pressed on 180-gram black vinyl, this live LP documents a unique performance of one of the defining albums of 1980s thrash metal.
