Originally released in 1969, Sea Shanties was the debut album by High Tide and remains one of the heaviest and most distinctive recordings of the early British progressive underground. The group featured Tony Hill on guitar and vocals, Simon House on violin and keyboards, Pete Pavli on bass and Roger Hadden on drums.

The album’s defining feature is the fierce interaction between Hill’s heavily distorted guitar and House’s amplified violin. Instead of serving as a decorative addition, the violin competes directly with the guitar, creating dense, abrasive textures over complex rhythms and dramatic shifts in tempo. Hill’s dark vocals and bleak lyrics add to the record’s intense, almost gothic atmosphere.

“Futilist’s Lament” opens the album with a combination of crushing riffs and intricate instrumental passages, while the extended “Death Warmed Up” develops into an aggressive guitar-and-violin workout. “Pushed, But Not Forgotten” introduces quieter, more reflective sections, and the lengthy “Missing Out” demonstrates the band’s ability to move between structured progressive rock and near-improvised psychedelic intensity.

This remastered Esoteric edition supplements the complete original six-track album with five bonus recordings. These include the previously unreleased studio pieces “The Great Universal Protection Racket,” “Dilemma” and “Time Gauges,” together with demo versions of “Death Warmed Up” and “Pushed, But Not Forgotten.”
