You've heard the Sweet Inspirations more than you know; they were practically ubiquitous on Atlantic's '60s recordings backing the likes of Aretha Franklin and Dusty Springfield, so much so that Jerry Wexler felt honor-bound to record them as a group in their own right, a decision that led to a happy result for all concerned. Not only did this, their 1967 debut album, make the Top 100 and land a Top 20 hit with 'Sweet Inspiration', but some guy named Elvis Presley down in Memphis liked what he heard of their gospel-inflected sound and hired them on as backup singers for an extended run. Estelle Brown, Sylvia Shemwell, Myrna Smith and Cissy Houston (yes, mother to Whitney) made a sweet, joyful noise unto every song that crossed their path, and this album had some great ones: 'Knock on Wood; Do Right Woman-Do Right Man; Let It Be Me; Reach Out for Me; Here I Am (Take Me); Why (Am I Treated So Bad); Blues Stay Away from Me; Don't Fight It; Oh!
