Black Earth is the debut album by Swedish melodic death-metal band Arch Enemy. Originally released in 1996, it introduced the distinctive combination of aggressive death-metal rhythms, sharply defined melodies and harmonised lead-guitar work that would become central to the band's sound.

Arch Enemy was formed by guitarist Michael Amott following his departure from Carcass. For the album he was joined by vocalist Johan Liiva, guitarist Christopher Amott and drummer Daniel Erlandsson. Michael Amott also performed the bass parts, creating a compact recording whose relentless rhythm section supports the contrasting guitar styles of the two brothers.

“Bury Me an Angel” opens the album with rapid riffing, harsh vocals and memorable twin-guitar melodies. “Dark Insanity,” “Eureka” and “Idolatress” combine the raw energy of Swedish death metal with expressive lead playing influenced by traditional heavy metal and the New Wave of British Heavy Metal.

The instrumental “Demoniality” introduces the album's second side before the intense “Transmigration Macabre.” After the brief acoustic interlude “Time Capsule,” the album concludes with “Fields of Desolation,” one of its most expansive compositions and an early demonstration of Arch Enemy's ability to balance brutality with strong melodic themes.

Recorded at Studio Fredman in Gothenburg and produced by Fredrik Nordström together with Michael Amott, Black Earth has a rawer and darker character than the band's later productions. Johan Liiva's rugged vocal performance and the direct, largely unpolished sound distinguish it from the more refined albums that followed.
