blue in ashes

Recorded in 1975, Blue in Ashes was intended to become the only full-length album by Munich progressive rock group Saffran. Although the recordings were completed, the band could not secure an original record release, leaving the music unheard beyond collectors familiar with their privately issued 1974 single.

Saffran combine intricate progressive arrangements with strong guitar and keyboard work, prominent flute and saxophone, and occasional touches of funk. Compact pieces such as the title track and “Heavy Maggie” lead into the more expansive “Uzahrade Saffranu” and “For You,” while the group also gives the Beatles’ “Eleanor Rigby” a distinctive progressive treatment. This Garden of Delights CD presents the complete 1975 album together with both tracks from Saffran’s rare single.
