Carmen Maki Blues Creation brought together one of Japan's most powerful young vocalists and one of the country's pioneering heavy blues-rock groups. Originally released by Denon in 1971, the album captures Carmen Maki's decisive transition from her earlier folk-oriented career towards the tougher rock style that would later define her work with Oz.

Maki is backed by Blues Creation guitarist and bandleader Kazuo Takeda, bassist and harmonica player Masashi Saeki and drummer Masayuki Higuchi. The stripped-down instrumentation leaves plenty of space for Takeda's distorted guitar, organ and blues-based soloing, while the rhythm section supplies a heavy, deliberate foundation beneath Maki's commanding English-language vocals.

“Understand” opens the album with a direct mixture of blues phrasing and psychedelic guitar, while “And You” and “Lord, I Can't Be Going No More” reveal a more restrained and melodic side. The extended “Empty Heart” develops gradually from spacious vocal passages into an intense electric workout dominated by Takeda's expressive guitar playing.

The second side begins with a dramatic interpretation of the traditional spiritual “Motherless Child.” “I Can't Live for Today” and “Mean Old Boogie” return to hard-driving blues rock before the album closes with a dark, extended treatment of “St. James Infirmary.” Maki's powerful delivery gives the familiar material an individual character, moving easily between controlled passages and raw, forceful peaks.

Recorded immediately after Blues Creation completed Demon & Eleven Children, this collaboration is an important document of Japan's early-seventies heavy-rock movement. Its combination of blues standards, original material, psychedelic guitar and Maki's exceptional voice has made it a highly regarded recording among collectors of Japanese underground rock.
