American tenor and soprano saxophonist and bandleader, one of modern jazz’s defining voices. After pivotal stints with Miles Davis, he led trailblazing groups through his Atlantic years (1959–61) and beyond, shaping hard bop, advancing modal jazz, and pushing into the avant-garde.

Coltrane Plays the Blues is a six-track, blues-centered Atlantic release issued in July 1962, drawn from an October 24, 1960 session at Atlantic Studios held during the My Favorite Things dates. The quartet pairs Coltrane with McCoy Tyner (piano), Steve Davis (bass), and Elvin Jones (drums); Tyner does not appear on “Blues to Bechet” and “Blues to You.” Produced by Nesuhi Ertegun.

Though cut during the My Favorite Things dates, Coltrane Plays the Blues stays mostly tenor-focused and earthy. Across six tunes—“Blues to Elvin,” “Blues to Bechet,” “Blues to You,” “Mr. Day,” “Mr. Syms,” and “Mr. Knight”—Coltrane stretches the blues form: some pieces are classic 12-bar frameworks; others lean modal, using static vamps and altered turnarounds for longer, exploratory lines. The two piano-less tracks (“Blues to Bechet” and “Blues to You”) open up extra space, spotlighting Coltrane’s grainy tone, Elvin Jones’s rolling polyrhythms, and the trio’s raw, conversational feel. With McCoy Tyner onboard elsewhere, you get the contrast: his wide, quartal voicings give the “Mr.” tunes a cooler, more modal shimmer. Overall the record feels intimate and live-in-the-room—focused, blues-drenched, and a clear bridge between hard bop roots and Coltrane’s expanding harmonic language.
