Don Kirshner's Rock Concert '74 captures The Eagles during the period surrounding the release of their third album, On the Border. Joined by special guests Linda Ronstadt and Jackson Browne, the group performs material from its first three albums alongside songs closely connected with the wider Southern California singer-songwriter scene.

The concert presents the expanded five-piece Eagles line-up featuring Glenn Frey, Don Henley, Bernie Leadon, Randy Meisner and recently added guitarist Don Felder. Felder's arrival gave the band a tougher electric edge, heard particularly clearly on the driving performances of “Already Gone” and “Good Day in Hell.”

The opening “Peaceful Easy Feeling” highlights the group's carefully arranged vocal harmonies before the programme moves into the harder sound of the On the Border material. “Midnight Flyer,” “Twenty One,” “Ol' 55” and “James Dean” demonstrate the band's ability to move between country, folk, rock and rhythm-and-blues influences without losing its distinctive ensemble sound.

Linda Ronstadt joins The Eagles for “Silver Threads and Golden Needles” and a particularly expressive version of “Desperado.” She also performs Buddy Holly's “It Doesn't Matter Anymore” with Bernie Leadon, whose guitar and harmony vocals connect the performance to the country-rock roots shared by all of the musicians involved.

Jackson Browne appears for “Your Bright Baby Blues” and “Looking Into You,” accompanied by members of The Eagles and multi-instrumentalist David Lindley. These intimate performances provide a contrast to the full-band material and emphasise the close musical relationship between Browne and the group during their formative years.

The concert concludes with “Doolin-Dalton / Desperado (Reprise)” followed by an extended collaborative performance of “Take It Easy.” Co-written by Jackson Browne and Glenn Frey, the song brings The Eagles, Linda Ronstadt and Browne together for a fitting celebration of the interconnected Los Angeles country-rock community.

This Rox Vox edition presents the complete television performance in remastered sound, accompanied by background notes and archival images.
