Harvey Mandel – Get Off In Chicago is a free-flowing meeting of blues, jazz, rock and funk led by one of the most distinctive guitarists of his generation. Originally released in 1971, the album brings Mandel back into a Chicago setting surrounded by a large group of musicians, creating the loose, spontaneous atmosphere of an extended studio jam.

Known as “The Snake”, Harvey Mandel developed an immediately recognisable guitar style built around fluid sustain, adventurous phrasing and an unusually wide range of tones. His career included work with Charlie Musselwhite and Canned Heat, as well as later sessions with The Rolling Stones.

Get Off In Chicago gives Mandel plenty of space to stretch out. “Jellyroll” and “Highway Blues” lean toward electric blues, while tracks such as “Local Days” and “Springfield Station Theme” explore a more jazz-oriented direction. “Race Track Daddy” adds a strong funk element, making the album an unusually varied snapshot of the Chicago scene of the period.

The record features numerous guitarists, keyboard players, bassists, drummers and vocalists working together in changing combinations, giving each track its own character while preserving the relaxed, improvisational feel of the sessions.

This Culture Factory USA / L.M.L.R. CD edition brings this cult Harvey Mandel recording back into print for a new generation of blues-rock and jazz-rock listeners.
