L’Uovo di Colombo is the sole album recorded by the original line-up of this short-lived but highly regarded Roman progressive rock group. Originally released by EMI Columbia in 1973, it has since become one of the most sought-after records from the classic Italian progressive scene.

The quartet centred its sound on Enzo Volpini’s keyboards, supported by the powerful rhythm section of bassist Elio Volpini and drummer Ruggero Stefani. Acoustic and electric guitars appear selectively, while Toni Gionta—later known as Tony Tartarini of Cherry Five—provides the album’s expressive lead vocals.

The music combines prominent Hammond organ, piano and synthesizer with intricate rhythmic changes, melodic vocal passages and occasional jazz-rock elements. The energetic opening track “L’Indecisione,” the atmospheric “Anja,” the instrumental “Turba” and the extended “Visione Della Morte” demonstrate the group’s ability to move naturally between forceful symphonic rock and more delicate, reflective sections.

Although L’Uovo di Colombo disbanded shortly after the album appeared, its members continued in groups including Samadhi, Etna and Cherry Five. Their only LP remains an essential example of keyboard-driven Italian progressive rock, presented here in a gatefold sleeve on 180-gram clear red vinyl.
