Deicide’s debut may have helped define death metal, but their sophomore release cranked the genre into the red. The tempos are absurdly fast, the arrangements dizzying, and the guitar tone downright vile—so when bassist/vocalist Glen Benton calls it “***kin’ over the top,” you already know the destination (if you guessed hell, you’re close) the moment the needle hits Legion’s grooves. As ever, drummer Steve Asheim is the glue in the near-unraveling mayhem, driving double-kick patterns at seemingly four-digit BPM while the Hoffman brothers whip up storms of guitar squall overhead. The songs have aged like a curse, too: “Trifixion” and “Dead but Dreaming” remain diehard favorites. It’s no wonder many fans still hail Legion—alongside the self-titled debut, and among the best-selling death metal albums ever—as Deicide’s finest; it’s unquestionably their most savage. This edition is newly remastered and pressed on metallic “rainbow inferno” vinyl, with a lyric insert that feels practically combustible.
