Released as the follow-up to the acclaimed Fig. 5, 2001’s Liberation finds these 12 artisans of sound (using a mix of percussion, guitar, vibes, saxophone, violin, and electronics) “liberated” of the confines of any set genre or structure, hovering somewhere in the very outer stratosphere of song itself. From spaced-out jams like “The Pigeon” and “Peace On Earth”, to their take on Dino Valenti’s “Something On Your Mind” (released on Karen Dalton’s 1971 album), this amorphous beast can still deliver a rewarding experience to those who dare to journey beyond the instant gratification of the pop song, for it is here that the future of music is being written.
