This comprehensive two-CD collection brings together the principal 1970s recordings of Kansas City multi-instrumentalist Michael Angelo Nigro. Working during unused studio hours, Angelo built his songs layer by layer, performing the vocals, guitars, bass, keyboards and other instruments himself, with drums supplied by Frank Gautieri on the original Guinn album.

The self-titled 1977 album combines melodic folk-rock, dreamy psychedelic pop and sharper electric-guitar passages. Songs such as “Flight of Pegasus,” “Oceans of Fantasy” and “Field of Lonely Eyes” balance memorable melodies with mystical imagery, introspective lyrics and a sound that seems largely detached from the musical fashions of its period.

The first disc also includes Nuts, recorded under the name Michael Nitro. These nine songs retain Angelo’s melodic writing while introducing a more direct and occasionally harder-edged approach. “Contessa,” “Russian Lament” and “Pamela’s Song” demonstrate the range of material he continued to develop outside his scarce debut LP.

The second disc presents A Sorcerer’s Dream, completed in 1978 after Angelo moved from Liberty Recording to Big-K Studios. Acoustic guitar, synthesizers, gentle percussion and effects-rich electric guitar create a spacious psychedelic atmosphere throughout “Sorcerer’s Delight,” “Nubian Queen,” “Spirits of Mercury” and the closing “Dreamfeast.”
