beaver & krause: nonesuch guide to elect
We've put out a number of unusual albums on our 'Collectors' Choice Music' label, but this one takes the cake. Conceived by Bernie Krause and Elektra label founder Jac Holzman on a plane ride to the Monterey Pop Festival, where Beaver & Krause were slated to demonstrate the newfangled Moog synthesizer, this double-album was true to its title, an instructional record on how to create electronic sounds using the Moog, complete with a 16-page "syllabus" detailing signal generation, voltage control, modulation and filtering (a PDF of which you can view at www.ccmusic.com/room.cfm?id=127). And, as such, the record only included one actual composition, 'Peace Three'; the rest of the tracks had such titles as 'Triangular Waveform; White Sound Tuned Filters; Low-Frequency Sawtooth-Tuning Through Harmonics', and 'Series of Sub-Audible Constants'. Over the years, this 1968 release has for obvious reasons become quite the underground classic, an artifact from a time when anything in recorded music seemed possible...and often was. Has to be heard!
