Otis Redding was an American soul singer-songwriter, born in 1941 in Dawson, Georgia, and often called the “King of Soul.” His emotive, gospel-infused voice and impassioned delivery made him one of the most influential singers of the 1960s. Redding blended Southern soul, R&B, and gospel, delivering performances filled with raw emotion and dynamic energy. Though his career was tragically cut short by a plane crash in 1967, his music remains a cornerstone of soul.

Otis Blue / Otis Redding Sings Soul was released in September 1965, Otis Blue is Redding’s third studio album and widely regarded as his masterpiece. Recorded in just 24 hours with the Stax house band (Booker T. & the M.G.’s, plus the Memphis Horns), the album features a mix of original songs and covers of soul, R&B, and pop classics. Standouts include “Respect” (later made famous by Aretha Franklin), “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long,” and his searing version of “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction.” The record captures Redding’s ability to pour deep feeling into both ballads and uptempo tracks, solidifying his status as a leading voice in soul music.
