When Dean went in the studio in January of 1957 to record his third album for Capitol, the pressure was really on: he had just broken off his phenomenally successful partnership with Jerry Lewis, who had gone on to record a hit album of his own for Decca. So, Dino, always deemed by the critics the less talented of the duo, really, really needed a breakthrough record. Sadly, it was not to be, but Pretty Baby proved to be perhaps the finest of his Capitol releases, with some of the best singing he ever did.
