Rainy Day is a 1984 album released on the now-defunct indie label Enigma, featuring a collection of cover songs performed by musicians from California’s so-called Paisley Underground scene. The project was organized by David Roback, then a member of Rain Parade and later of Opal and Mazzy Star. Joining him were his Rain Parade bandmates—Stephen Roback, Matthew Piucci, and Will Glenn—along with members of the then-up-and-coming Bangles (Susanna Hoffs and Vicki Peterson), Dream Syndicate (Kendra Smith, Dennis Duck, Karl Precoda), and The Three O’Clock (Michael Quercio).
The tracklist reflects the shared musical roots of the Paisley Underground movement. It includes covers of songs by The Velvet Underground, Big Star, and Buffalo Springfield—the latter represented by two Neil Young compositions—as well as traditional folk tunes popularized by The Byrds and The Beach Boys. Rounding out the selections are tracks originally by Jimi Hendrix and The Who, illustrating the scene’s wide-ranging reverence for the psychedelic and folk-rock pioneers of the late 1960s.
