Evaluations reveals a remarkable missing chapter in the history of American psychedelic rock. Recorded in Jacksonville, Florida, during April 1969, the album captures The 2nd Coming at the point where heavy psychedelia, blues rock and the emerging Southern jam sound began to merge.

The formidable line-up featured Larry “Rhino” Reinhardt on guitar, Reese Wynans on organ, Richard “Hombre” Price on bass and the two-drummer combination of Monty Young and John Meeks. Reinhardt would later join Iron Butterfly and co-found Captain Beyond, while Wynans went on to work with Stevie Ray Vaughan and Joe Bonamassa.

The sessions produced a powerful mixture of distorted guitar, Hammond organ, hard-driving rhythms and open-ended improvisation. Compact psychedelic songs such as “Evaluation” and “No Pretty Colors” sit alongside the extended “Roller” and an atmospheric combination of Buffalo Springfield’s “For What It’s Worth” with Donovan’s “Season of the Witch.”

The album was intended for release at the time, but the group was unable to cover the studio bill and the recordings were shelved. The master tapes remained unheard for decades before being recovered by former band members and restored in collaboration with Guerssen Records.

This CD edition presents the complete album sourced from the original masters and adds two bonus tracks: the intricate instrumental “Funk in 5/4” and the expansive seventeen-minute live performance “Shoot That Load Boogie.” Essential listening for followers of Captain Beyond, Iron Butterfly, Cream, the Allman Brothers Band and vintage American heavy psych.
