This 2003 release marked a genuine crossroads moment for Static-X. After Korn’s Jonathan Davis recruited Wayne Static to sing on “Not Meant for Me” for the Queen of the Damned soundtrack, the band suddenly had a surprisingly melodic template—and it nudged them toward an entirely different lane. Soon after, they swapped longtime producer Ulrich Wild for Josh Abraham, whose résumé leaned more mainstream (think Staind and Velvet Revolver), and the lineup shifted as drummer Ken Jay and guitarist Koichi Fukuda departed. Yet despite the upheaval—helped in no small part by the firepower of A Perfect Circle drummer Josh Freese—the chaos yielded another Top 20 album, one that tested longtime fans of their industrial/nu-metal bite even as it pulled in a fresh crowd.
