A memorable Pete Townshend line from "Pinball Wizard"-"He stands like a statue"-might just as easily have described John Entwistle, the Who's Sphinx-like bassist, a pillar of onstage sanity in a seething musical volcano. When one or two Entwistle songs on the new Who album no longer scratched the itch, the legendary bass player, his guitar-toting pal Cy Langston and Humble Pie drummer Jerry Shirley cut Smash Your Head Against The Wall in 1971, and suddenly there was an embarrassment of Entwistle riches. Featuring a more sinister version of "Heaven And Hell" as well as "My Size," an industrial strength buzzsaw containing the album's title-"I'd been smashing my head against the wall trying to get songs on the Who albums," says Entwistle-the Sundazed release also sports an exclusive interview with the man who revolutionized rock and roll bass guitar.
