One of the most striking voices in avant-garde jazz, Albert Ayler's saxophone fronts a fierce ensemble. In its ranks: Ayler's brother Donald on trumpet, Charles Tyler on alto saxophone, Cal Cobb on harpsichord, Gary Peacock, Henry Grimes on dual basses and Sunny Murray on drums. Recorded September 1965 at Judson Hall NYC, this historical date saw the group perform some of the most challenging and exciting music ever named Jazz. From the basis of folk, blues, marches, spiritual, and gospel forms, they temper and transform these themes into raging avant-horn throttling and propulsive group invention, free-wailing chaos and back again.
