Dzyan was originally formed as a five-member group in 1972 and recorded their self-titled debut album just two months later. It was released on Aronda, a small label based in Bad Homburg and operated by producer Günther Müller. However, this initial lineup never performed live and dissolved within a few months of the album’s release.

Soon after, bassist Reinhard Karwatky regrouped as a trio under the same band name, bringing in guitarist Eddy Marron and drummer Peter Giger. The trio signed with Bacillus/Bellaphon, with production handled by Peter Hauke (known for work with Omega, Nektar, Jeronimo) and Dieter Dierks managing studio engineering.

Their first release for Bacillus, "Time Machine" (1973), showcased their technical prowess in jazz-rock fusion, with the 18-minute title track drawing strong comparisons to John McLaughlin’s Mahavishnu Orchestra. Despite their virtuosity, the music retained an earthy, almost raw character.

With their follow-up album, "Electric Silence" (1974), Dzyan fully embraced their unique blend of Krautrock and jazz-rock, achieving what many consider the peak of their artistic vision.

At the time, the influential magazine Jazz Podium praised Electric Silence as evidence that Dzyan had become "perhaps the best German band" in the jazz-rock realm. Years later, Achim Breiling of the online magazine Babyblaue Seiten described the album as "certainly one of the strangest, yet most impressive and original works ever produced in Germany at the intersection of jazz and rock."
