Versus the World is the fourth studio album by Swedish melodic death-metal band Amon Amarth. Originally released by Metal Blade Records in 2002, it marked an important stage in the development of the band's sound, combining their established aggression and harmonised guitar melodies with a heavier, more deliberate rhythmic approach.

The album features Johan Hegg on vocals, Olavi Mikkonen and Johan Söderberg on guitars, Ted Lundström on bass and Fredrik Andersson on drums. The musicians create a dense and powerful sound built around down-tuned riffs, driving percussion, melodic lead-guitar passages and Hegg's unmistakably deep vocal delivery.

“Death in Fire” opens the record with one of Amon Amarth's most direct and enduring compositions, balancing a forceful central riff with an immediately recognisable melodic theme. “For the Stabwounds in Our Backs” and “Where Silent Gods Stand Guard” continue the album's dark atmosphere through controlled pacing, layered guitars and imposing vocal performances.

The title track concentrates the band's defining elements into a powerful battle anthem, while “Across the Rainbow Bridge” adds a more reflective and melodic character. The second side moves through the crushing “Down the Slopes of Death,” the expansive “Thousand Years of Oppression” and the relentless “Bloodshed.”

The closing “…And Soon the World Will Cease to Be” brings the album to an appropriately dramatic conclusion. Its extended structure, shifting dynamics and apocalyptic atmosphere demonstrate the band's ability to build songs that feel both physically heavy and cinematic in scale.

Recorded at Berno Studio in Malmö, Versus the World helped establish the approach that would define Amon Amarth's subsequent albums: melodic death metal shaped by Norse imagery, memorable guitar themes and a powerful sense of narrative. This DeAgostini edition presents the complete nine-track album on heavyweight vinyl with an accompanying illustrated booklet.
