Whatever Happened To…? is one of the great obscurities of modern homemade psychedelia. Although recorded during the early 2000s, the album sounds like an unknown private pressing rescued from the final years of the 1960s.

Dave was the deliberately anonymous North London duo of Peter Harknett and Russell Elliott, two musicians and dedicated record collectors with an intimate understanding of vintage psychedelia. Working in a converted garage studio, they created a richly atmospheric mixture of acid folk, fuzz guitar, dreamy vocals, primitive effects and extended improvisation.

The music draws on the English psychedelic tradition of Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd, S.F. Sorrow-period Pretty Things, July and the Koobas, while also incorporating the open spaces of Gene Clark, Popol Vuh and Hawkwind. Its hazy production and slow-burning intensity should also appeal to listeners of Spacemen 3, Flying Saucer Attack and the more psychedelic side of 1990s shoegaze.

The original album was mixed directly from the desk by Harknett and Elliott and privately pressed in 2005 in an edition of only 50 copies. Its extremely limited circulation and mysterious presentation gradually transformed it into a highly sought-after collector’s item.

For this expanded edition, Peter Harknett returned to the original multitrack tapes and carefully rebuilt the mixes. Spreading the material across two records greatly improves the sound compared with the unusually long sides of the original pressing, allowing the guitars, vocals and psychedelic effects considerably more space.

The original seven-track album is joined by the previously unreleased session recordings “Drifting” and “Carry On.” The accompanying download also contains an alternate mix of “In My Mind.” Presented in an expanded gatefold sleeve with lyrics, photographs and detailed liner notes, this is the definitive edition of a genuine DIY psychedelic cult album.
