Originally released in 1969, Witchcraft Destroys Minds & Reaps Souls is the debut album by Chicago group Coven and one of the earliest rock records built completely around occult imagery and supernatural themes. Jinx Dawson’s commanding vocals are supported by electric guitar, organ, piano, bass and drums, creating a mixture of psychedelic rock, hard rock and dark theatrical pop.

The opening “Black Sabbath” establishes the album’s ominous atmosphere through distorted guitar, dramatic organ and Dawson’s powerful delivery. “The White Witch of Rose Hall” draws on the Jamaican legend of Annie Palmer, while “Coven in Charing Cross” combines a driving psychedelic arrangement with spoken ceremonial passages.

“For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge,” “Pact with Lucifer” and “Choke, Thirst, Die” balance memorable vocal melodies with blues-influenced guitar and sinister lyrical themes. “Wicked Woman” is one of the record’s most immediate songs, propelled by a strong rhythm and an especially forceful performance from Dawson.

The album closes with “Satanic Mass,” a thirteen-minute spoken ritual rather than a conventional song. Together with the record’s elaborate original artwork and insert, it helped establish Witchcraft Destroys Minds & Reaps Souls as a landmark of late-1960s occult and psychedelic rock.
